Genius Hour Post 2

So far the work on my scrapbook has been really positive. This past week I focused on beginning the meat of the project. My main goal was to being the writing process and strategies developing a few of the poems that I will be including in my scrapbook. Last week i had created a list of the different poetry styles I wanted to focus on and this week I begin putting that into action. My strategy is to begin with the shorter poems first and slowly build to the more lengthier poems. So far I have written acrostic and haiku poems.

The content of my poems thus far have not followed any particular theme. I have just written about whatever topic comes to mind. The topics I have explored cover a range from being personal poems to leaning toward the fun and whimsical side. My moms have always been more on the fun side so I have been making a conscious effort to wrote about stuff that is meaningful and relevant to my experiences. This will show in a couple of the poems I have written so far where I tackle topics such as what defines me and I wrote about my school experience.

Haiku/Acrostic Poem Part 2

I have enjoyed writing these poems so far. It had been a while since I focused on writing so it was fun to step back into that world again. This project has reminded me the enjoyment and sense of self that writing has given me and to not give up on a talent. I want to do open mic performances again and this project could give me the poems ideas I have been looking for. The latter part of the project where i focus on the illustrations will also help to reignite my liking for visual arts.

For next week the poems that I want to tackle involve more complex poem types such as Shakespearean or limericks. These poetry styles will really push me to develop my skill as a writer and learn the technical side of the craft. I often forget that writing is a craft and I want to use this project as a platform to become more experienced and proficient in my ability to write and conceptualize the spoken word. I want to tackle topics such as my experience with ADHD and my fears of of becoming an adult in future poems. These are genuine fears that play a part in how I see my life going forward and  poetry can help me to understand these feelings. I also hope to get some ideas for the cover of my scrapbook and the types of images to put on it.

The classroom activity that provided an ah-ha moment for me was designing an online assessment. This was so helpful because it showed me the resources that are out there for both designing assessments and providing additional background to the content through videos or other media. This process also increased my technological proficiency which i found useful because I still consider myself a novice in this area. This activity and others have made me more confident with my ability to use educational technology. It has also made me nervous however because I realize that beyond teaching content I also have to find ways to connect it with the digital world.
