Genius Hour Post 5

My Genius Hour is coming along really nicely. To finally see what is almost a finished product is really cool. I have put a lot of time into it so it is rewarding to see it all come together. I have all the poems done but I may choose to add another couple in order to fill out another page or so. This week my goal was to start the illustration process. I focused my attention specifically on the cover page. I have not finished colouring the cover page but the drawings that will go on it are done. I drew three images that I am representing on the cover page. The first is a cartoon image of a giraffe smiling. I chose this image because I have a poem in my scrapbook about giraffes and they are one of my favourite animals. The second image I chose is a cartoon head of C3P0. The reason I chose this image is because I have a poem about Star Wars in my scrapbook and also for sentimental reasons. Not only is Star Wars my favourite movie of all time but C3P0 is my favourite character from the movies. The last image I drew is a picture of the Batman logo from the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Batman is my favourite comic book superhero and I dedicated an Ode to him in my poetry book. It also is a really cool logo and it spreads across the page nicely.

What I have left to do is colour the cover page of my scrapbook and go over some of the text of my poems that didn't print out fully legible. Those are my goals for next week in addition to adding a few images scattered throughout the book. Once I do that the scrapbook will be done. The images I add throughout will be small due to the space available on the pages so there is not much work left to be done. I really like the finished product and I think it turned out nicer than I imagined when I started the project. Once I add some colour to it I think it will really pop and add some visual appeal.

The Learning Object jigsaw activity was actually a pretty unique experience. It was fun getting to use a chatroom feature and getting to communicate with all our group members instantly and digitally. The thing that stood out to me the most was how we all had different resources and chat rooms based on our group. I thought this was a fun and clever twist on the activity because it forced us to engage and collaborate. I found a few really useful resources for things like presentations and brainstorming. I would repurpose this for my own classroom by having students look up a different aspect of a certain historical time and then have to communicate their findings to other groups. This activity is great because the core idea is adaptable to whatever subject or unit I would be teaching.

  1. Hey Matt, this is a comment not specified to your Genius Hour 5 post, but pertaining to a review of your blog as a whole as per the EDUC8Y24 portfolio rubric. First and foremost, great work! I can see you engaged with your topic in a thorough manner and took a lot from this activity. Going through the rubric then- You score full marks for having all artifacts to be completed thus far. You also score full marks for not having copyright anywhere on your blog, as all of your material was personally produced rather than taking it from elsewhere, very impressive! Your layout is great, with carrying font sizes used repeatedly throughout the blog. However, I do think the blank profile at the side of each page is quite bland and just distracting. On that note of improvements, the one thing your blog is missing, is reflection posts stating how you engaged with the different technologies used for your Movie Trailer, Proposal, and TED Talk. I would recommend updating this. Other than that adjustment, great work! hope you continue this high quality blog in the future.
